Headaches Your head hurts. Your eyes hurt. Perhaps youve been sitting at your computer for too many hours, staring at pixels until youre sure your retinas are permanently damaged. As you work your way home after work you can feel the tightness in your neck. You try to stretch it out, moving your head from side to side and rubbing the back of your neck where the tension of the day seems to have taken up permanent residence. Congratulations, youve got another tension headache. Tension headaches are the most common headaches suffered. They cause a slight to moderate pain all over the head and some have described the feeling as one of having a tight band around their head. Although some headache pain can be intense, its not usually caused by some underlying medical issue Our lives are busier than ever these days. We work harder, we work longer, we skip breaks and eat lunch at our desks. Were tethered to so many electronic leashes for so many hours of day that we dont get much down time. The result of all this stress? Fatigue, burnout and lots and lots of headaches. Usually popping a few Excedrin or Ibuprofen helps relieve the nagging pain of a tension headache. Sometimes putting a heating pad on the back of your neck helps, as do some relaxation techniques that can be practiced easily. If you are suffering from headaches several times a month and they last for several hours or even days, if they disrupt your life, if they give you nausea, vomiting or you have visual difficulties, then you should consult your doctor right away. Your headaches might not be simple tension headachesthey could be migraines. Youll want to discuss many things with your doctor and its a good idea to write down a list of things you know about your headaches and their patterns. Youll need to tell your doctor how often you have your headaches, where your pain is, how long they last, when they happen (sometimes they can occur more often during your menstrual cycle), the symptoms you get along with the headache and if you have a family history of migraines. Be prepared for a physical exam that may include bloodwork in order to rule out other issues you may be having. Headaches are no fun, but there are ways to alleviate the pain and reduce their frequency. Talk to your doctor and get some help
